145878 (cn P-9) The Martin P6M Seamaster was the only American jet flying boat bomber produced. The Navy was looking for a fast bomber that could deliver a nuclear payload at low level. Being powered by 4 Pratt & Whitney J75 turbojet engines, the P6M started to show great promise but was abruptly cancelled in 1959 in favor of the Polaris submarine-launched nuclear missile after only 16 examples were completed. Today, all that's left is this rear fuselage and few other small parts. This is on display at the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum. |
