41-2595 (cn 2406) Mr. Mike Kellner of Merango, IL was able to locate this very rare version of the famous B-17 Flying Fortress in a scrapyard in Maine. What makes this airplane even more special is that it is one of four B-17s that was converted to an XC-108A. The XC-108A was the all-cargo version of the B-17 with no guns, no bomb bay, a hinged door in the nose, and a rear port-side door for cargo loading. He is now restoring it to flying condition at his house back to its original B-17E configuration. If your interested in Mr. Kellner's story about this airplane, pick up "Hidden Warbirds" by Nicholas Veronico. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Cheryl Kellner for giving my dad and I a private tour of their workshop! |
