Ouch!  Amazing that the Skyraider was said to have landed minus the outer portion of its wing, and that the Mustang pilot bailed out just in time!

Shame to lose the Mustang but more importantly the pilots were both ok.  I heard that the Mustang pilot, Rob Davies,  suffered a broken arm.  The Horsemen - Ed Shipley and Dan Friedkin were both in the air at the time.  Dan was in the same formation flying "February" with "Big Beautiful Doll" and the Skyraider.  Dan thankfully wasn't involved in the incident.  Ed was flying in the group behind the mid-air and circled the downed Mustang and pilot helping to direct emergency crews.

I wouldn't be surprised if they determine he broke his arm in the bailout, it almost appears as if he struck the vertical.  Great recovery on the Skyraider...wonder if there's video of his landing and/or the damage?

Here's a little news segment You need to be a member to view our links..

Tragic for a P-51 to be lost but even more important is that the pilots survived.

It looks like the Spad just overtook the Mustang and hit the tail. Honestly, it looks like the Skyraider took all the damage. I couldn't see anything wrong with the Mustang-no fire, no smoke, no obvious holes or tears to the empennage.

I wonder if the control wires were severed, and that was why he crashed.

I agree, it looked like the Mustang took a blow, but was relatively unharmed.  I found some pics of the Skyraider sans wingtip:  You need to be a member to view our links.

Good that all survived.

Have to say I enjoyed the Lightning "Thunder Run" on the same link.

I thought that the Mustang looked ok as well - but if you watch that video it seems to start to go into a dive right before the pilot bails out - may have been issues with the aircraft that can't be seen on video.
