I know there's a discussion going on in another site about this, too, that might be of interest. But I don't think there is the will nor the resources (see CLE's still huge debt) to either build a brand new airport in the middle of nowhere or to significantly expand or rebuild Hopkins. Sure, I've seen IND's and even BUF's nice, modern terminals, as well as plans for spectacular looking new terminals at PIT and MCI. Also, I am a huge CLE booster, but we simply don't need a new terminal.
The current one is functional, easy to navigate on all but the busiest days/periods, is in reasonable shape for a 40+ year old facility built on the bones of a 65+ year old terminal, and gets the job done for the most part. Sure, incremental and aesthetic improvements could still be made, including improving/moving the less-than-stellar FIS, redoing (and cleaning properly) the restrooms, raising the roof or adding skylights (like on C) on Concourses A & B to gain more natural light, expanding the terminal southward to gain some more square footage for whatever purpose (that new FIS on C, dining/retail, a more welcoming meet & greet area, an expanded security checkpoint, and/or eventually to connect with a repurposed/renovated Concourse D). Moreover, the airfield has more than enough capacity to meet the region's aviation needs for years to come. Eventually CLE's terminal will need to be more fundamentally renovated or replaced, but now is not the time, especially during this post-CO/UA hub transition period. Let the current changes shake out and then reevaluate, perhaps with a new master plan and go from there.
