A very large and destructive tornado has hit Lambert-St. Louis International Airport and caused serious damage to Concourse C among other locations.

The Weather Channel had extensive coverage of this storm as it went through the northern St. Louis metropolitan area. The have shown some video of a shuttle bus sitting over the edge of a parking garage (one forecaster wondered if it was placed there by the storm, as shuttles usually don't go into parking garages), signs upended and shattered windows.

The Weather Channel is also reporting flights diverting to Kansas City and Chicago.

The FAA (You need to be a member to view our links.) site has the following message:

Due to TORNADO DAMAGE, the Lambert-St Louis International Airport (STL) was closed as of Apr 22 at 08:54 PM CDT. The date/time when the airport is expected to reopen is not known.

Holy crud...you're kidding? Wow, not a good place to be against all that glass. There's quite a few videos starting to come out on youtube, looks to be a good bit of damage:

Apparently, the airport itself is technically open, but the terminals are so heavily damaged there are no flights operating. I guess FedEx has operated a couple flights and there are facilities for some operations, but it will probably be a few days at least until the airlines resume anything close to a normal schedule. Some reports say the airport will "reopen" on Sunday.

STL spokesperson said they will try to operate at 70% on Sunday.

An American Airlines 757 was heavily damaged. To give some perspective: a Southwest Airlines 737 was separated from its jetway by the wind (conflicting reports that the plane or the jetway moved, but both are heavy.)

The tornado has preliminarily been rated an EF3, with winds up to 135 mph.

Still looking for a good shot of that 757...AA said at one point there was no damage (?).

Wow is right...that just gave me goosebumps! Amazing the lights stayed on, and how quickly the wind changed direction. And to see all those people running...geez! Thanks for the link!

Edit: Take a slow-mo look at :30 into the video. This guy comes running towards the camera just as the shih-tzu hits the fan...I'll bet he had some laundry to do later. Scary stuff.

Seriously though, I'm so glad that no one was seriously injured...it could have been so much worse.

Speaking of Wow, check out this very well done video:

feature=related

It was obviously taken by a pilot or an airport worker and shows you a ramp side view of the event. Pretty amazing stuff!
