FYI, Today at 1:30pm an electronic sign was placed at the Port Columbus Aircraft Viewing Area stating “Viewing Area Closed Forever”.  I knew this day was coming but not this soon.Cry

"Viewing Area Closed Forever"  That's rather audacious and quite a rude way to put it!  Reading between the lines: F*** off and don't ask!

I wonder if they're going to build something there.

i think you should confirm this with the airport, people have been known to get into those signs and change the intended text for humorous reasons(even though in this case, it is not humorous)

(but, still, watch out for velociraptors or zombies on the highway ahead of you)

No warning, no date or anything?   Normally they would barricade or block it off.

I like the parking garage better, but it makes me wonder if they'll start chasing people off that next.

I sure hope this was for some reason other than "security"...I have a real thorn in my side about things like this.  I'm all for security...anyone who works at an airport is all about that, but many programs at airports around the world have proven that having spotters actually increases security.

No matter what the reason, the wording is terrible.

The new runway and its lights are going where the viewing area is, that's only reason I see them closing because it would obviously be too close to the aircraft's flight path.  It was a very popular place, there was rarely a time when there wasn't someone there.

The new runway is a complete waste of money though in my opinion.  Said they could do simultaneous departures but in reality they can't.  They probably are legal to do it in terms of the distance between the two runways is far enough apart but the center requires 5 mile separation between departures so they still have to wait to launch guys anyways.

Really don't want to be forced to pay $3/hour now.  Have never been hassled there though, only approached once by security looking for someone who needed a jump, told him I didn't and was just taking pictures and he didn't care.  Great airport in regards to that though compared to others I've read about.

I emailed someone in regards to a discount or something for the garage but I highly doubt it but it never hurts to try!

I'm going to repost what I said in the gallery because I'm too tired to re-write it!:

"Yes, I did hear that since seeing this photo, and that makes me feel a lot better. In fact, I'm glad they are improving the field, and that makes a whole lot more sense than closing it for other reasons…and it essentially removes any sense of injustice I may have had. With luck, they will make a new one somewhere else! Still…"forever?" Sheesh! 🙂 "

Sorry guys for not posting more of the background story. I was thinking locally and not globally. I see the dirt pile changing daily so in my rush to post, I didn't think to explain. I will say that in the few years since Rich gave me the courage to venture to the parking garage roof, I have met many airport staff. They have been friendly and open minded about our hobby.

Was there twice back in March, with less traffic than we get here in Cleveland, don't see the need for a third runway either. Traffic in & out was pretty even for both sides of the field based on where each airline had its gates. Delays, none because of congestion. Maybe they got some use or loose it money from the feds for this. Spotting from the parking garage is great! No hassles, close to food & bathrooms.

I sent an email to the airport authority asking if they were considering making a new area off Sawyer Road near the catering building. They didn't even have the decency to reply. I sent it in April long before the closing. I can not understand why they are spending so much money on an airport that clearly is not that busy. Our tax dollars down the drain. That area was used by numerous people, lunch break area usually would find 15 or more cars there. No one seems to care now if you want to spot spend the almighty dollar for the garage, as for me not many visits any more, thanks Regional Airport Authority, no place at KLCK or KCMH, way to run a "big" league airport!
