I've been keeping this on the DL for awhile now, but I guess that I can mention it now.
I've taken a one year contract job in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and I'm leaving on 9 April. I'm leaving on Delta DL 3979 to JFK, and then taking Saudia SV 0022 direct to Riyadh.
Anyone have any pearls of wisdom for these? My longest flight to date was from BWI to Phoenix years ago on SWA. I'll be spending about six hours at JFK before I board my connecting flight overseas.
Anyone ever flown into Riyadh? Are there any restrictions on photography over there?
Anything? Bueller? Bueller?...

From this Wikitravel site (which seems to have some very useful information): You need to be a member to view our links.
Photography is probably the easiest way for a visitor to inadvertently get into trouble. Do not take pictures of any government-related building (ministries, airports, military facilities etc) or any building that could possibly be one, or you risk being hauled off to jail for espionage. As Saudis place a high value on privacy, do not photograph any Saudi men without permission and do not even point your camera in the general direction of women, period. Even government publications avoid pictures of people and often resort to mosaicing out faces if they have to use one!
Good luck in Saudi Arabia! I hope they're paying you handsomely to go there. My brother lived in a Middle Eastern country for a few years as was not too thrilled with the experience, and where he stayed was a modern, "secular" country not a theocratic autocracy like SA.
You have six hours at JFK - I'd suggest staying in the airport rather than trying to get out for sightseeing. JFK is like a city within a city and has shuttles to other terminals so you can maximize spotting without leaving the airport.
For your flight, I suggest trying to sleep because of the time difference. Other ideas: a book to read, a pocket game, or a laptop computer in your carry-on so that you can work.
I already got the warning about photography. I asked the recruiters about it fairly early. Sounds like a real bummer. I was really hoping to get some interesting things over there.
I was planning on staying inside the borders of JFK. Any suggestions on locations inside the terminal?
Any other info you can get me would be really great.
