This terrible event happened yesterday at lot where I park for work less than an hour before I came in.  I had to park in short-term parking as the employee lot was closed.  Not only did two people die, but one of my co-workers witnessed the event and saw the man shoot himself.  In addition, four employee vehicles in the lot were also damaged.  The city's claims that the lot is "guarded" are patently false, and the security "gates" are a mere formality...people drive through them all the time and it often takes days for them to replace the lifting arm.

Such a tragedy, I'm just glad innocent bystanders weren't injured or killed:

Perfect post Chuck.

Do you think the one proposal a few years ago for a dedicated airport police department would be a benefit to the security of the area, or is it just a problem regardless of which entity claims to patrol the airport?

Well, there already is a dedicated division of the Cleveland Police for the airport, but I heard talk recently about cutbacks in the airport staff.  They help keep the peace in the airport proper, and try to keep the traffic moving, but you rarely see them at the employee lot.  I'm not sure if any security force could have stopped what happened as it happened so quickly, but there have been plenty of other incidents and thefts in the lot over the years that I've parked there.

I was shocked when I saw this on the news Monday morning.  I used to park there when I ramped for DAL years ago.  Also glad it wasn't worse than it already was.  Not sure that any level of security could have prevented this from happening.

If any good can come of this, perhaps the airport would be more willing to add visible police and security patrols to areas surrounding the airport.

Employee lot

Rental Car Center

Brookpark Rapid

Brookpark Rd as a whole

and the various off airport shuttle lots

I agree, there was probably very little that could have been done to prevent this incident.

Yes, but it's also a double-edged sword as far as spotters go.  So many folks don't understand what we do as a hobby and how it can actually help with security.  That was one of the reasons I met with the head of Hopkins security a few years ago to let him know who we are and that we are harmless.  Of course, that man is now in jail for diddling himself outside of a laundromat while stalking young ladies.  What a society we live in.
