I am a bit puzzled with the new N876CA. It arrived at the end of May and I saw it on the A stands the morning after it arrived in Austrian colours.
Last week, some 6 weeks later, I saw N876CA pottering about Hopkins still wearing the same colours! It definitely arrived from Greenville on the 6th July according to Flight Aware, BUT(and it is a big but) it now appears to have a crudely hand drawn tail number on the right side.
N839CA is now at Hopkins and is therefore the 5th arrival(Unreported by OpShots). According to FA it went to Greenville on the 2nd and returned on the 11th. When did it arrive here? 8 days at Greenville sounds about right for a full repaint.
My question is why has it taken so long for N876CA to return to CLE and still in Austrian Colours? Has it been rejected and going back to Austria? Is it the same aircraft that arrived in May at all? Was there a duplication of ferry numbers?
More questions than answers. Anybody throw any light on this?
Hmmm…not sure exactly what went on as I was on vacation for a bit of that time period, but I do know that they had a bit of a change of heart about who was doing the paint on them. I think the first two were completed at Indianapolis, the next two at Greenville, and the last is yet to be determined.
Further to that, getting them into service was more than just a fresh new paint job, they all had to be converted to -311's from the -314's they were when with Tyrolean (Austrian). The -314 model is not certified for US operations, so a number of things had to be changed to convert them to -311's.
The conversions themselves were done here in Cleveland, and each aircraft had to be re-certified by the FAA. In addition, the interiors had to have significant work as well, work which was also performed here. In what order the painting (off site), and conversion (on site) was completed varied from plane to plane and it may be that N876CA had the conversion before getting the paint. What I know for certain, is that it is now in service in what appear to be perfectly normal colors and lettering:

I don't recall having seen it in crude numbers but again, something may have gone on while I was on vacation.
And you are correct that the arrival, and any other photos of N839CA for that matter, are lacking from the database. Now that I know that, I'll have to hunt it down!
Hope this answers some of your questions!
P.S. I tried to move the entire topic to the General Aviation board intact (not a Geek Alert), but it seems to have been split into two somehow! I'll try to join them together tomorrow, but for now, I hope you figure it out!
