I was very afraid of this.....the cuts in the military are hitting the airshow circuit. The Blues and Birds will be standing down. The Navy TAC Demo team is canceling the rest of the season. FIGURES!!! F22 is scheduled to be here this year and we may not get it now.

Plus they are stopping flyovers....SERIOUSLY???
This whole sequester nonsense is a bunch of hooey! The will still need to fly to maintain hours, it's not like these flights are "extra".

Sequester or not, I wonder if the 'Angels or the 'Birds could get airshow sponsors to pay their direct operating costs - basically, fuel and per diem. Are they that big a draw?
Seems as if they could make up whatever small percentage of their total costs the sequester cuts may be pretty easily by charging a reasonable fee.
"This is the type of waste that needs to be cut. If you want an airshow pay tickets for the real cost of the show. I think you wouls stay home if the cost was allocated correctly."
Not sure how you can call a military demo "waste." Military demos serve a purpose - to showcase the professionalism, pride and teamwork that goes into making our military what it is and to help inspire young adults to join. Our armed forces are an all volunteer force. What is "wasteful" about that? And what is the "real cost" of an airshow ticket? Shows that have the Blues, Thunderbirds or any military demo pay for them to be there. The cost of the team's appearance is passed along to those who buy tickets to the show.

It is a little more complicated than that unfortunately. Air shows already pay a fee per appearance, lodging costs, support equipment costs and a few more items. There are other costs involved with the teams one of them being parts to keep the jets flying. The other issue is that none of the military demo teams only fly at shows. There are training flights that are required to maintain pilot currency. When the Navy is curtailing operational flying, including cutting deployed flight hours 55%, there isn't any spare cash to keep the demos in business.
I've been seeing a lot of stuff posted on some other forums that I am on with military folks. Without going into too much detail, the cuts that are being mentioned are nothing compared to the things that they have been talking about.
No training for units getting ready to be deployed overseas to the war zone. No money for war fighter equipment, only bare minimums. Honestly, as much as I hate to see the loss of ALL the demo teams, and the air shows, I would rather sacrifice that to give the necessary items to those going into harm's way.
Looking at what others have posted on FB, and other places, it makes me feel ashamed at how selfish some of these people are. They need to look at the bigger picture. The reason we get to see these things is to show the public what their tax dollars are paying for to protect the country. Right now, the more important thing needing to be done is to conserve those resources for their needed missions. Let's not forget what the average age of our equipment is. And these aircraft are flying maximum sortie rates overseas in a very harsh environment. It's not the European Theater of Operations. It's the desert. Every time a plane takes off and lands here, they literally get sand-blasted. That puts a lot of wear on all of the equipment, increasing the mean-time between failure rates. In other words, the gear doesn't last as long as it should.
A-10 wing spars are reaching failure times much quicker than they were projected to because of it's high use. And replacement spars are getting scarce. The dies for making them were destroyed years ago. The Air Force only has what is available at AMARC. Harriers are just as old, and wearing out just as fast.
The point is, training sorties, or not. The air frames need to have their flight hours conserved for their intended mission.
Here is something a friend sent me from CNAS:
Newcomb said that if the sequester forces the government to withdraw all military aircraft from 2013 air shows, he will have to “examine financial viability of the [Cleveland] show.”
He said modern military aircraft, and World War II warbirds are top draws and without them the public is likely to stay home.

Out of the sandbox, finally!
I think we are being a bit naive here.
It's not about there being no money available, it's about inflicting as much visable pain as possible.
Never in history can I recall a president intentionally causing something like this over a 2% cut in the increase in govt. spending.
There is a million places that could be cut that would not even be noticed. cancelling White House tours! Give me a break!
It's like when a school district threatens cutting bussing if a tax doesn't pass.
Nothing short of extortion.
It's all politics.

Yep. Exactly. Notice the way the WH painted all sorts of Armageddon predictions of what would happen. Then when it became obvious that it was going to happen, they started to back away from what they had been saying.
Pure unadulterated politics that is not helping anyone. Kick all of them out, and put in term limits.
