Local news Channel 19 just reported that the aircraft continued to (try to?)ping satellites for several hours

This brings up a question about the ability to constantly communicate with satellites, Why arent black boxes wired to a transmitter to send out flight deck voice and flight information? Do we not have the technology to do this? Seems like something that should be done in todays times on aircraft.(if buses can do it, why not aviation?(security cameras on buses))
