I thought this was kind of neat.  That's one way to get a Super Hornet home.  Apparently the first time ever.

As an ex-military guy, it's disappointing to me that forward-area repairs were apparently not possible.  Either there is a special reason for bringing the carcass home or our logistics is FUBAR.  The only way we can afford to haul stuff home for repair is if the war is in Mexico.

Interesting point.  The article further states that "normally, if the plane isn't too damaged, it would be flown back home for repairs", so that seems like even minor repairs are being done stateside.  I wonder if line maintenance is all we are capable of in field?

They'd fly it home for the equivalent of a heavy check. In this case of hauling it home, I have to believe that the engineers want it for some material or system study, looking for some unusual failure mode.  Just a guess.
