I guess I will never understand. Just booked a flight south in January. Been watching prices for 45 days now. CLE just can't get my business again. This will be the 6th flight not out of my hometown airport in the last three years. I can drive to DTW, CMH or CAK spend the night pay for parking and gas and still save. I know we are geared up for the business traveller but my gosh.

Two tickets-

DTW-TPA $259 each
DTW-MCO $205 each
CMH-MCO $196 each
CMH-TPA $240 each
CLE-TPA $269 each
CLE-MCO $230 each

Why can't I ever find a ticket at CLE under $200? It has to be well under that price cause the parking at CLE is nothing short of a rip off.

If I would have booked a month ago I had one price out of DTW for $150 each !!!!!!

LOL...such is the nature of the beast, unfortunately.  I don't understand it in the least either, and they can all be different tomorrow...or Thursday, or an hour from now.  Kinda like gas prices...Frown

Good luck figuring it out...it's not going to happen!  At least with gas prices, there's some logic to the fluctuation.  Airfare evades even the wildest of imaginations!

Mark, I think it comes down to the fees and taxes the City is demanding. Wasn't CLE listed as one of the highest in the Nation at one time? I seem to remember that we were discussing that on here a few years back.

What is the big deal about the prices listed:

Dtw to Florida is the longest distance and the highest price

Cmh  is 120 miles south of cleveland and slightly cheaper

Cle is the mid point and has the mid point fares

( why drive to Columbus  4 hours and a tank of gas to same $30)

if Cmh is so great why do they have so few flights across the USA)

Tank of gas? It is $60 plus for two people tk. Plus I drive a very economical vehicle not a tank. I could drive to and fro a few times on a tank of gas. Besides I shop at giant eagle and so do parents and other friends that don't use their fuel perks. So we rarely pay for gas at my house. I did not say I like to do it. But cle is just not geared for regular people.

they key to cheap airfares is not having to go at a certain time.    I know that's not always possible, but its what does the trick.     For my vacation flights, I sit and watch and watch and watch and watch and finally BITE!    I'm signed up for several website fare alerts  (Travelocity is one) and keep my vacations flexible.   In all my years of flying, the most I've ever paid is around $250, and I always head west....a lot farther than FL.   I've even gotten an airfare to LA as low as $108 r/t within the last few years.

If you HAVE to travel for the holidays you're basically screwed price-wise.   There's always the 21-day window rule of thumb that says fares will go up once you get inside that window from the time you want to travel, but other than that being flexible is the way to beat the system....and I've become quite good at it.

Agreed Chris and I have all the same tricks. If I flew on a Wednesday and came back on a Saturday I would save even more. But then I have to take more days off work that I want to save for later. Is what it is I suppose. My LA trip a couple years back was $150 round trip each direct flights.
