This is a cautionary tale of sorts about a diversion I was once personally involved in back in 1985.
I lived in Luton, UK which has an airport but had to travel to Paris on business and did not fancy flying from Heathrow or Gatwick. I booked Air UK from Stansted to Paris CDG. Stansted being about a 35 mile, 75 minute drive (bad roads) from my home in Luton. Outward journey... no problems. Return journey hindered by thunderstorms across Paris, Northern France and SE England. Plane ( a Shorts 3-60) departed about an hour late due to the weather. They diverted it to Luton....great I thought I'll be home early.....then I remembered my car which was parked at Stansted!
Got a free taxi ride (courtesy of Air UK) to Stansted to collect it and got home about 3 hours later than planned! Mixed emotions were experienced I'll say!
We had that once on a flight from LAS-CLE in 2000. It was an ATA charter, i believe a 727. Hot weather in the desert (shocker) didn't allow us to get our full load of fuel, and we didnt have enough fuel to wait it out in the air, so we went to CAK instead. It was about 15 miles from our house...of course by this time the person picking us up from the airport was already at CLE.
This was interesting because ATA didn't have any way to pay for fuel at CAK and ended up having to sign some paperwork that was brought up the back steps by a ramp worker. interesting flight to say the least.
Some years ago, I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Rio de Janeiro, with an interim stop at Sao Paulo. On approach to Sao Paulo, we were put in a holding pattern due to thunderstorms. Eventually, we diverted to Rio itself, which was the destination of about half the folks on the plane. For some reason, because our port of entry was to have been Sao Paulo, they wanted to send the entire plane back there before turning around and coming back to Rio. Luckily, we had a representative of the Brazilian tourist board on the plane with us, and she managed to convince them to let those of us who were going to Rio to deplane! We wound up getting there at about the same time as we were originally scheduled to, so no big loss!
Dimoko, as for the ATA incident and the ramper bringing some paperwork, I wonder if what you may have seen was the fueler themselves. They always present the fuel load to the cockpit to verify the load with the crew. It's possible!
Did you end up going CAK-CLE in the end? Or did they terminate the flight there?
we ended up going up to CLE, nice short flight up and down...and one i make on FSX on occasion.
This brings up another interesting topics.
somewhere in the magic of fare calculations my friend got a flight from PIT-CLE-BOS that was cheaper than the CLE-BOS by itself. he booked it and thought he could just show up for the CLE-BOS part of it...well, continental didn't care for this and he ended up paying a hefty fee.
as i've done some booking with reward stuff i have found that we are pretty much slaves to the computer these days. the agent knows what i want...they tell me that it SHOULD be possible...but they can't do it because the computer wont let them...at least that is the excuse they give.
