Oh man, that sucks.  The heavies will all be gone before I get a chance to go there.  Who will that leave left as far as cargo?  Just UPS and FedEx like us?

Are the ATI DC-8's gone, too?

Man, TOL doesn't even have FedEx planes since that area is easily served out of DTW.  Bad deal for that area.

My thoughts are with the employees there - hope that they can find jobs elsewhere...

I don't believe that leaves anyone on that side of the field. I saw several different companies fly in and out, but they all used BAX Global's gear and people for load/unload operations.

I believe drpepper is correct.   All the freight in/out of TOL had everything to do with BAX.

What a shame.  How old are the facilities at TOL?  Can the airport market itself with ready-to-go facilities at a good price to try to lure some new carrier in?  With the infrastructure already in place, is it a good place for a smaller carrier that might be wanting to grow instead of a larger carrier more interested in DTW or IND?

I can tell you the pavement is in excellent shape, and is a mecca for autocrossers because of its size, shape, and surface (very similar to pavement we use for National Championships in Lincoln, NE). Hopefully we can use more of the site if it does go unused, but hopefully they can find a use for it. Being somewhat close to Detroit and NASA (Plum Brook and Glenn) maybe Aerospace research is an option.

I can tell you from being there over weekends how few commercial flights there are and the same goes for general and military aviation. I think BAX's departure is going to have a much bigger impact on TOL than anyone suspects.
