Read to day on Cleveland.com that Ostondorf-Morris is teaming up with a German firm to try and flow more international business to and from Greater Cleveland.

This could be an opportunity that the City has been looking for in convincing UA to re-start international service out of Hopkins.  With the Star Hub at FRA, this venture, if it is very successful, may demand such service between the two cities.   In fact, I'm writhing a letter to the person from Ostendorf that is quoted in the article, and I will also make this known to the group that runs the COSE-backed website backing the hub here.  You need to be a member to view our links.

The city, the corporate backers of the hub, and Ostendorf-Morris would be crazy not to bring UA in at some point to discuss this possibility.

What say you?

Not sure how willing UA is to devote significant resources to CLE. So far, they seem to be maintaining the hub's status quo with a few minor tweaks. It would help if a 757-200 could consistently make the trip without having to stop for fuel westbound, but I think FRA-CLE is just out of range. Does UA have a spare 767-300 to use on this route (too bad UA is retiring the perfect sized 767-200ER). I hear anecdotally that UA trucks tons of cargo to EWR from CLE, so maybe cargo could help subsidize the flight. Perhaps they could come up with some revenue guarantees like PIT has done to get the flight going. But then eventually, the flight would have to make decent money for UA for them to continue it.

On a related note, where do the plans to redo the international arrivals area at CLE stand? I think the new Master Plan addresses this, but I'm not sure the demand or funds are there to do this right away.

UA could do it, at least seasonally, if they wanted to, with a 767-300.  The traffic is there and FIS complaints are a red herring - FIS at Dulles and Term B of Newark are more crowded. This year the schedulers are probably telling themselves they need to hold back spare 767 capacity in case of serious 787 problems, but next year - 2014 - might be a real possibility.

This year UA is being s-l-o-o-o-w to add back the January CLE schedule reductions, but at least they are adding them back, even if it's taking until summer in some cases. That's actually quite good news.

It will also be a huge plus if the CLE pilot base survives.
