It has been in the works for years and is flying now. It is supposed to follow up Hubble.

It has been re-engined and flies at 45,000 feet so as to be above a lot of the atmosphere clutter and has a very powerful telesope.

Hope to get to see it in person this summer.

Smithsonian Air & Space had a fantastic article on how they engineered it to fly with that big of an opening in the fuselage (SWA could learn a thing or two).
