Currently, FSX is still going strong 9 years after release, you can find an optimized version on Steam usually for $25, $8 currently while on sale til the end of the month of November.
Many addons do work with FSX:SE(FSX: Steam Edition) but there are a few that require workarounds to get them to work properly.
FSX Addons are being updated for FSX:SE by the major addon developers and are usually noted in the requirements section for their addon product pages.
There is also X-Plane 10 out there that you can find boxed for $30 but does not include the entire world, you can find the full world downloadable version of XP10 on Steam for $60 usually, But having just checked this past minute, it is going for $30 til the end of the month.
Another contender out there is Prepar3d, While not intended for the entertainment market, you can still buy it from the Lockheed Martin webstore: You need to be a member to view our links.. This product is basically an optimized updated version of Microsofts FSX.
MS Flight has come and gone quickly and seems to be seen by the public as a failure.
Some of you may know that Microsoft does not intend to continue development of the MS Flight Simulator franchise and has sold the rights to Dovetail Games based out of the UK, they are the people behind the Railworks/Rail Simulator/Train simulator 2016 series, DTG has plans to work on their own Flight Simulator based on the MS framework and release a new product, but it is unknown when this might happen, Job listings for a flight simulator product have been posted on DTG's website within the past year.
Flight Sim hardware products are still being sold, you have your choices of VRInsight, CH products, Saitek and Goflight as the main players, you can also find companion apps for your Android or IOS devices, Here is a first place to look for said apps: You need to be a member to view our links.
Updates in the Flight Sim world:
Dovetail Games(DTG) has released Flight School, This game features the entire globe based on FSX technology but only features 2 aircraft so far, Piper Super Cub and Piper Cherokee with a third aircraft on the way being developed by Alabao, This third aircraft will be the Diamond DA42 which is a twin engine super light aircraft.
Flight School is more based on earning specific pilots licenses but does feature the entire globe just as FSX has done, It has a new GUI and every flight requires you to make a flight plan before flying. DTGFS will not feature the ability to add on aircraft or scenery but They may add in another class of aircraft in the future as a recent presentation at Flightsimcon mentioned they want to have an airline pilots certificate.
Flight School is available on Steam for $15
At the same time, DTG is also working on an entirely new Flight Simulator which will contain many of the elements of Flight School and also be open to third party addon developers.
