I presume you're talking about the 5D II?
If your main subject of photography is aviation, the 60D is the camera in my opinion. It's a 1.6x crop vs full frame on the 5D, higher fps, faster autofocus, etc. With the crop sensor you are essentially closer to the action than with full frame to begin with (200mm lens on 1.6x equals a 320mm lens on full frame).
The 5DII is a great camera though, better in low light, shallower depth of field because of the full frame and other stuff, really depends on what you're after. Rumors are floating around the 5DIII may be on the horizon, so the 5DII's may go down upon release who knows.
If it were me I'd do the 60D and spend the saved money on some glass.
I hope the 60D isn't a piece of crap! I've had mine only for a week or so, and so far I like it. What's taking getting used to are the greater capabilities over the ones I've had, and the repositioning of some of the buttons. I'm still trying to get used to it and am going to take it out today for some more practice.
Good glass always helps though!
I am also eying the 5DII or probably 5DIII or whatever full frame camera Canon may come up with. The 60D is certainly no piece of crap. There were a lot of disgruntled 50D owners who didn't like how Canon decided to evolve the prosumer series with the 60D which was smaller, had no micro focus assist etc... In the end the 60D turned out to be a fantastic camera, a sort of super Rebel. The 7D was the next step up for XXD series users. I decided to get one, and meh, I'm not in love with it. I don't really take a lot of airplane pictures anymore. At least not spotting ones where long telephoto lenses are needed. I miss the depth of field from 35mm and that's why i will be going to full format. Although the 7D will probably stay be my back up camera, or when I do need to zoom in. So if you are a spotter and mostly use long telephotos, there's no real reason to get a 5D. If you also do other photography like people and such, the 5D may be much more pleasing. And Megapixels? I'm over megapixels. I don't need more than 12 megapixels. I wish the manufacturers would spend more money getting better dynamic range and less noise rather than upping the MP's for every new camera.
Hey guys,
I'm still shooting with my 30D and was looking into upgrades as well. Was between the T3i and the 60D. I'm wondering what kind of stuff the 60D has to justify the price. I dont use my SLR much outside of aviation and sports photography. for most stuff i just use my S95 because it is easier to carry.
Is the 60D worth the extra cash?
For pure image quality, you won't see much difference between the T3i and the 60D. It's really all about custom functions. And you will get a little better auto focus with the 60D. If you do a lot of sports and aviation, the better auto focus on the 60D might come in handy. You do know about the Canon loyalty program, right?

I am leaning for the 60d still, full HD video, external mike, ISO up to 12,800 rear LCD viewfinder much better, higher max shutter 1/8000. But the price is a lot more too. I had forgotten about their trade up. I could trade in my old original rebel xt I suppose. That would leave me the XSI and the 60d.
