Great news for travelers, but I wonder how they will get around the CO scope clause, if the planes are flown by UA Expresss pilots on CO routes?
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The newly merged Continental and United Airlines will start flying larger regional jets out of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport in the next few months.
The introduction of the 70-seat planes will give customers a more comfortable aircraft with the choice of a first-class cabin, said Jeff Smisek, chief executive of the parent company formed by the carriers' merger -- United Continental Holdings Inc. Regional partners for Continental had been limited to 50-seaters because of terms in the carrier's contract with pilots.
Smisek didn't give details on how many regional flights for Continental will now be flown with larger United Express jets. Regional partners carry four-fifths of the passengers that Continental flies out of Hopkins. Seventy-seat United Express planes will also be introduced in place of the smaller Continental aircraft in Houston and Newark.
Apparently there will be three flights by Shuttle America, one each to BOS, LGA, and DCA, starting in mid-Feb.
I'm not sure how the scope provisions apply, but during the merger process there was a comment from UA (by Kathryn Mickells during the July earnings conference call?) that the scope provisions would be "mooted" by the merger. Consult your local labor lawyer on that one.
