We have a lot of diversions and rather than clog up the Geek Alert board, I figured I'd start a topic here because I'm wondering a few things about all of them in general.

I know CLE has the capabilities to handle pretty much any size aircraft, but do we have the facilities and manpower to handle this many!?  The poor TSA and customs agents must be overwhelmed right now!  Not to mention all the other ground and support crews!

Also, today's COA86 is en route and well on its way to EWR and the last I checked, EWR is still shut down!  Any possibilities for a fourth 777?  I'm assuming that the reverse of this flight (EWR-ZSPD) has been cancelled, meaning no aircraft in Shanghai, presumably stranding folks there as well.

So far, we have three 777's and soon to be a 757.  Things in CLE must be getting crowded!

You are correct on that...we can handle them, it's the sheer number of passengers that have to be deplaned and cleared through customs, and as it is they are working like crazy over there.  They want to send us quite a few more, but then we would get stuck in "long tarmac delays" where people would be stuck on planes for too long while awaiting customs, and we can't have that.  So...everyone is working on finding solutions to these issues.  I'll update as I have time.

conrad, when you say fourth 777, does that mean that there are 3 on the ground at CLE right now??

that would make a great photo op to get all 3 of them in one shot :D

Sweet! Except that I'm stuck working today and tomorrow, and am missing all this.

From the sounds of it, though, it reminds me of when we used to get stuff that was getting hurri-vaced.

Out of the sandbox, finally!

Yes, there are 3 777's at CLE right now (unless any of them have left since I last checked).  Flights COA83, COA86, and COA98 are all 777's.  COA69, a 757, was to divert to CLE, but FlightAware seems a bit unclear now regarding this flight.

You need to be a member to view our links.

It appears that maybe is has diverted back to EWR from it's diversion to CLE?  A lot of you guys understand these things a lot more than me, so please jump in here!

CO's website shows that CO69 arrived in CLE at 2:42 p.m. Can anyone at CLE confirm that?

Yes, CO 69 is parked on A-9.  Word now is CO 1971 from Delhi is on its way, another 777, and possibly a couple more.  They just announced EWR is officially closed until tomorrow.

Okay... CO 86 is also on its way, making a total of 5 777's here...a new world record!!

WOW!  Are there enough hotel rooms in the vicinity of the airport to accommodate this many people?  Any estimations on the number of stranded passengers in CLE due to diversions?  I should go set up a hot-dog stand in the parking lot...

"I should go set up a hot-dog stand in the parking lot..."  Or maybe egg-rolls?

This is definitely a chance for CLE to prove not only that it's worth keeping as a hub, but that it's capable of stepping up and handling these large international flights.  Maybe the new United will realize this and start sending more internationals to CLE to help alleviate congestion at EWR and ORD.
