I need a calling card for domestic use within the US, but am having trouble finding exactly what I want, so I'm soliciting suggestions.  I don't mind paying the connect fee, but a monthly/weekly service fee is unacceptable.  I canNOT have PINless dialing.  This card is to be used from multiple locations, so I need to be able to enter a PIN number as I won't always be calling from a recognizable number.  Pennytalk.com has a monthly service fee of $0.99 and a connect charge of $0.49.  I'd like to get away from the monthly charge as this card is intended primarily for emergencies, so is likely not to be used very often (I'd like to have a balance available when I go to use it!).  Prepaidcall.com is where I usually get my international cards, but their domestic card is PINless, so that won't work.  I'm reluctant to just do a Google search for calling cards because there's no telling what kind of scam I might stumble upon!  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My first thought was "wow, they still have those?".  I had a MCI card many moons ago.  Anyway, I did some looking around.  Sees it is hard to find a card which has no recurring maintenance fees but a PIN.  Closest I came is this one:

But I'm not sure what "Carrier Maintenance Fee - Up to 10% means"...

Do you have local phone service?  If so, did you check to see if they offer a card with a PIN?

My first cell phone was a TRACfone.  I don't know if they even sell those anymore.  I got it at Wal-Mart for $40 and then bought minutes as needed.  For example, $30 would get you 100 minutes.  The phone warned you when you got below 10 minutes.  Might I add that it was quite durable.

They do sell Tracfones still, but you need to recharge them periodically (depending on what amount/timeframe you got), so if he wants to go months without using it, he might end up having a dead Tracfone when he needs it.

Personally I would recommend the Virgin Mobile service, it's $25 a month with 300 minutes, unlimited texting and data.

But that's probably overkill...

The cell phone isn't an option.  My cell phone is a Droid with Verizon with all the bells and whistles.  I need a card to keep in my desk at work for the occasion I need to make an urgent personal call.  I work in an environment where a cell phone is STRICTLY prohibited; any attempt to bring one on the grounds will result in immediate termination and most likely criminal charges!  The PINless cards won't work because it's quite a task to get an outside line and there are several different numbers that I could be calling from, depending on how my call is routed when I get the outside line.

I had the need recently to make an emergency personal call, which is what made me think of getting the calling card.  I had to go the whole day and wait until I clocked out at the end of the day to make the call and that made for a long, brutal day!

I'll check out the speedypin website you mentioned, Michi and see if I can't figure out what that mystery fee is!

Your job won't let you make an emergency phone call while at work?  Wow...

Right...there has to be some kind of law protecting against this sort of thing.

I can make a personal phone call in an instance like this, it's just that the call I needed to make was long distance.  I couldn't go to my car to get my cell phone because once you're inside, you're inside.  Going in and out is not forbidden, but it's frowned upon because it can be a lengthy process (and a royal pain in the rear).  I'm just wanting the calling card for the convenience of myself to avoid having to do so in the event such a need would arise again.

Understood, but still, being frowned upon when you have a personal emergency in another state doesn't seem to be a great place to work atmosphere...  Most companies would say,"here is a private room, use our phones and call as long as you need to".  Anyway, none of my business.  Hope you do find a decent card!

This thread is dying for a game of twenty questions!

I'll start, do you have to change clothes once you get to work?
