In case you didn't know, the Yorktown Lanes bowling alley in Parma Heights went up in flames today causing the roof to collapse and considerable destruction to the facility. The Lanes were open at the time when the fire started in the grill area and spread quickly. Thankfully, no one was injured in the blaze, and the fire department was able to respond very quickly, as they virtually share the same parking lot…indeed, the fire station is 500 feet away!
Now, I'm not much of a bowler, but I have bowled here (one of the maybe 20 times I've bowled in my life!) and it saddens me that this place that's been there all my life may be gone for good.
The call to the fire department came in at 3:53 PM, and these photos were taken four minutes later at 3:57 and show you how intense it was. According to Google maps, this is 4.42 miles away as the crow flies from my work station at the airport, and I took these shots from across the room and through the window shades.
Here's a news piece on the fire:

Saw the smoke in the distance while taking my son to marching band camp. Someone must have sent in a tip to WTAM 1100 AM because they knew what was going on while the smoke was thick. This will mess up the schedule there for the upcoming 33 week fall/winter/spring leagues which start in September. WOIO's local TV show Star Frame Challenge with Chuck Galeti may have to find another location or delay production of new shows. The coincidence is Galeti was the guest host on Mike Trivisonno's afternoon show on WTAM when the news broke. Might be interesting to read the fire officials report. If the fire started in the snack bar/grill/kitchen area, what went wrong with the fire suppresion system?
Five departments responded to the fire. They had to ventilate through the roof and Brooklyn's tower was providing a master stream in the one photo I saw. Parma, Parma Heights, Brookpark, Brooklyn and Middleburg Heights all responded. They spoke to Cottrell who said the fire started near the beer coolers in the lounge. He said they'll reopen in six weeks. They just got a few leagues that bowled at Bradnan's before they closed. I had to laugh at the conspiracy freaks on cleveland.com that claimed it was some kind of insurance scam. The place has been owned by the same family since '59. My old man bowled in a league on Friday nights there, so have other relatives...
