In just seven years, JetBlue Airways has leapfrogged the competition to become the biggest carrier at Logan Airport, offering discount prices and high-tech amenities on flights to 39 destinations and counting.
The New York-based low-cost airline will top 100 daily departures from Logan for the first time next month, and plans to eventually bring the daily total to 150 flights.
JetBlue’s increasing influence – with an assist from discount carriers Southwest Airlines and AirTran – has cushioned fare increases at Logan as ticket prices climb across the country.
“We’re pretty much a low-cost operation all the way around because the legacy carriers have matched those (discount) prices,” said Ed Freni, director of aviation for the Massachusetts Port Authority, Logan’s owner and operator.
U.S. airlines have already raised fares six times this year in response to higher fuel costs.
