BRASILIA — A Brazilian court has convicted two American pilots for their role in a 2006 midair crash with a Brazilian airliner that killed 154 people, but commuted their jail terms, angering victims’ families, AFP reported Tuesday.
Relatives of people killed in the accident said in a statement Tuesday that they were “disappointed and angry” with the judge’s decision.
“They’ll just go to the embassy for coffee, and the judge thinks that is a sufficient punishment,” Rosane Gutjahr, whose husband died in the crash, told reporters as she left the courtroom.
