May 3, 1991. American Airlines said last night that it had reached an agreement to buy three Trans World Airlines routes to London for $445 million, a move that would complete a changing of the guard in trans-Atlantic aviation.
American ended up paying Carl C. Icahn, T.W.A.’s chairman, the entire price it had originally agreed to pay for all six of T.W.A.’s routes into Heathrow Airport in London, considered the dominant gateway to Europe.
