Unknown (cn Unknown) The Army National Guard used to maintain a presence at CLE, flying the UH-1 Iroquis (Huey)in medivac duties. This pic was scanned from a 30 year old photo I took in July of 1981. The olive drab camo made picking up the s/n impossible. The west side of the airport sure looked different back then! Even in 1981 I had unrestricted ramp access just by asking around. Sadly, that access will never happen again.

The west side of the airport did undergo radical changes in the 1990's, including Sundorph closing, and I agree with your reasoning on the move. I always liked stopping by Sundorph in the old days because they had interesting planes parked there.

Wow, what a blast from the past. Thanks for sharing Kenneth, this is an excellent photo. I can certainly remember the UH-1s that were based at Hopkins.

As far as relocating to the Lorain County Airport - I can only guess, but it was probably due to the closing of Sundorph Aero. These helicopters were based at Sundorph and they closed their doors around 1990 or so.

Anybody remember the Captain Lawrence Coyne UFO incident? He flew with this unit. Every time I hear that story I laugh because I remember these guys drinking a lot of beer in the hangar prior to their flights. Things have sure changed a lot since the early 1970's!!

This unit did move to Lorain County, but I cannot remember the date of the transfer or the reason why.

Holy Moly. I have totally forgotten about the Huey's that used to be based here. Did this unit eventually go to Lorain County because I used to always see them out there about 10 years later.
