Doing some more digging, Burke opened in 1947, and the 5,200 foot runway was not opened until 1957. That dates this picture into the mid-50's by my estimate, and since BKL was open and doing business, would be the logical place for Cleveland Air Transport to operate from. A bit more can be found here: http://www.burkeairport.com/About/History.aspx |

Look just to the right near the top of the terminal tower, on Burke's grounds. Those are hangars (small white buildings) for private planes. I would agree Burke was operational when this picture was taken, obviously the main runway has not yet been built. Good detective work! |

found this article from a 1954 Pittsburgh Gazette: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1129&dat=19541019&id=4U0NAAAAIBAJ&sjid=CmwDAAAAIBAJ&pg=5268,18774 Says it flew between CLE-BKL. Could it be that BKL was much smaller back then thus not yet big enough to be visible on the parcel of land shown above? |

Wow. Another new Cleveland aviation fact for me. I wonder where the downtown heliport was? |
