52-2220 (cn 361) March 23, 2011. Fear that Britain would fall to Nazi Germany prior to the US entering WWII, the development of a truly long-range intercontinental strategic bomber was imperative. Technology of the day couldn't meet the demands set forth by the USAF; the B-36 was as close as anybody could come. On display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, this B-36 last flew 52 years ago on April 3, 1959 to be put on display in the museum. The aircraft is so massive that it could barely be framed from an upper-level observation area!

My Dad remembers seeing B-36's at CLE back in the day, and I just found some cool shots of them on this page, along with a lot of other cool Cleveland Air Races photos:

Thanks, guys! I still can't believe how big this thing is. The picture just doesn't do justice to the massive size of it. Did you know that the wings at the root are 7 feet thick!

Check out the movie, "Strategic Air Command", starring Jimmy Stewart, for some great footage of this ten engine monster.

Nice shot of the original "Aluminum Overcast". There was one on outside static display at an USAF base I was stationed at and these things are truly massive.
